The work, finally published posthumously, shows the early, combative Bultmann struggling with inherited tradition and critical of Schleiermacher, Brunner, and Troeltsch. Yet it also presents "as useful a prolegomenon to his principal works as anything he subsequently offered," says translator Roy A.
