Paul Monette's uproarious, sexy novel takes us deep into the glamorous world of vintage Los Angeles Perched on top of a hill in the oldest part of Bel Air, Crook House is the grand mansion that gilded Hollywood dreams are made of. It seemed like the perfect place for the exhausted and neurotic Rita to take time away from her life and catch up with her old friend Peter and his lover, Nick. What she didn't count on was her friends' emotional baggage, not to mention the suspicious tales of a buried treasure underneath the house. This second novel from Paul Monette puts a tender focus on the ways in which money and time can distort relationships, while also demonstrating how the ties between friends can endure--and even grow stronger--no matter what the distance or history. As Rita, Nick, and Peter get closer to unraveling the mystery buried underneath Crook House, they begin to learn that what they are searching for could be the key to their very survival. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Paul Monette including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the Paul Monette papers of the UCLA Library Special Collections.
I am rereading this book, after having read it when it first came out.More years ago than I care to admit to.It deals with a life style before the main focus of our lives turned to the Aids epidemic, and the friends we were loosing. It gives a better picture of what a great enviroment it was to come out and be Gay when things were first changing. It has a true insight into what many relationships are really about. But has some suprises along the way.I plan on rereading the Gordon Merrick series after this. I remember how empowering it was to read these at a time when I was just coming out,and could read a story that actually dealt with this new lifestyle I was experiencing, even if it was beyond my reach to be in the same circumstances, it instilled hope that this was something I could deal with.My first book I read was the Front Runner, and was what got me into this type of novel.I highly recommend it.It could be a current scenario, and does'nt feel like a story dated with the time it was written.A must read for young men who think they are alone in the world, and we who want to remember a time when a deadly disease wasn't a part of our everyday lives.

I loved this book ... probably the most overlooked of all Monette's work. Pre- AIDS, it's fun and frothy, with a great set of characters. A good mystery, it's also a refreshing love story aobut two men who understand each other and are totally confident in each other's love!
