Book Overview

Stravinsky's score for the ballet Petrushka, commissioned by Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes, was first performed in Paris in 1911 and was an immediate sensation with the public and the critics. It followed by a year the great success of his score for The Firebird, also produced by the Ballets Russes, and it confirmed Stravinsky's reputation as the most gifted of the younger generation of Russian composers.
The ballet had begun in Stravinsky's mind as a "picture of a puppet suddenly endowed with life, exasperating the patience of the orchestra with diabolical cascades of arpeggios." Soon Diaghilev had convinced the young composer to turn the work into a ballet score. Benois was chosen to be his collaborator in the libretto, Fokine and Nijinsky became involved, and the bizarre tale of three dancing puppets -- Petrushka (a folk character in Russian lore), the Ballerina, and the Moor, brought to life in a tragic tale of love -- would soon become one of the most acclaimed and performed of ballet masterpieces.
Brilliantly orchestrated, filled with Russian folksong as well as new and striking harmonies, alternately poignant and splendidly imposing, the score of Petrushka continues to be a popular subject for the study of tonal language and orchestration. This edition is an unabridged republication of the original edition published in 1912 by Edition Russe de Musique in Berlin. Printed on fine paper, sturdily bound, yet remarkably inexpensive, it offers musical scholars, musical performers, and music lovers a lifetime of pleasurable study and enjoyment of one of the most popular and acclaimed musical works of the twentieth century.

Score right on with the audio

Full Score is what it is. Well printed. I follow the score with the CD and it's right on.

original score

I got this score because the orchestra I belong to was going to play this piece and thought it'd give me a better understanding of it. This score has a clear description of each tableau and detailed stage directions whenever the mood or musical theme changes, and has been a great help for me to understand what's happening in this ballet. However, this is an original score and while very helpful as a whole, since my orchestra was playing the revised edidtion, there were many differences between them in instrumentation, sometimes in a number of measures and even time signatures, and sometimes it was very confusing. Although I was glad that I had this score while practicing this piece, I did wish if I'd gotten the revised version. Beware of the type of edition you want to read!

Petroushka in full score

To feel powerful type music of this type to go naked into wooded mountain slopes without any pudding. This is to run with the birds!! I feel this music rubs into the soul with woodchips and cedar branches. tenthousand times I listen to this while my sister howl out loud and the tenthousandth time I also howl. The spirit of spiders is in my palm and I run it through my hair and straighten my lapel while performing an awkward little dance step. If read music is music read then red music is music red but I see red when otto take away my music. You try listening to this music without no music! Not easy eh? sometime soul cry out for release and this is like that without any of the other or maybe a little bit but not a whole lot of the other and then you body go this is very good and you mind think this is very good and you soul know too that this is very good and you move your feet and walk to otto's house and go THIS IS VERY GOOD! again I say this is very good.i go now.

Petrushka

Petrushka is arguably the best ballet Stravinsky ever wrote. If you liked The Rite of Spring or The Firebird, then you will love this score. Stravinsky was a brilliant composer and Petrushka is an example of one of his finest works. The story is about a Russian puppet show, but the music can be interpreted in so many ways, there really is no way to review the ballet based on what one person thinks it should have been. Therefore, I will tell you just that the music is wonderful even if you would have interpreted the ballet itself otherwise.

The Wonderfull word of Stravinsky

About this great composer of twenty century, and your magnificent work, only i can say thank you, Mr. Igor Stravinsky for you born; is your music an inspiration for all composers on the world.
