Excellent book, great code examples

I used to instruct Java courses for Sun, and this was one of the books I recommended on a regular basis. Although it's not a book for beginners, it is a good source for learning things like GUI construction, beans, and basic servlets. If you are unfamiliar with Java, the code examples will probably be a little too sparsely commented for you; experienced programmers will be able to follow the well-structured examples.I rate this a four because of what I perceive as two key drawbacks:1) Dr. Barkakati tries to cover a wide array of material in the Java language, and the book gives you just enough to get you eager to try things; you need additional, in-depth resources for effective coding of GUIs or servlets 2) You must download separately a SDK and the the API documentation; they are not included on the companion CD. While this may not seem too much of a hassle, consider buying this book for use with a laptop you can't immediately hook up to a network. If you want to code servlets, beans, etc. and have the documentation, that will be four downloads (J2SE, J2EE, BDK, API docs). And if you can only find a dialup, you'll be in hurting status.

One of a kind

Unlike any other programming book, this book, written by Barkakati, gives you real world solution. While it may not be the most comprehensive book available on Java, it's certainly a delight, with it's many useful applets and applications. Ranging from applets for web page enhancements, to client/server program, servlets and JavaBeans, this book is a good guide for any Java enthusiast, particularly those who wants useful examples or to study expert techniques. In short, an invaluable resource that will serve programmers years to come.
