One day, Hippo acts very strange. He bellows, spins in circles, and crashes into a tree. All of his friends think he has gone bananas But has he? Or does he just have a bad toothache? Kevin O'Malley's bright marker and colored-pencil illustrations bring to life the animals of the Serengeti as Cuckoo Bird, Monkey, Leopard, Giraffe, Zebra, and Elephant try to figure out how to help their distraught friend. Their off-the-cuff solution brings this cheerful picture book to a humorous conclusion.
Hippo wakes up with a toothache. He spun in a circle and crashed into a tree. His friend the Cuckoo Bird sees this and thinks Hippo is going bananas. She flies off to tell Monkey.... This is cute story. What is fun is how each animal warned adds a new part to the story as he warns another. Kind of along the lines of the old telephone game where the original message gets distorted as it passed told over and over again. In the case of the Hippo, the message eventually becomes he is knocking down trees, rolling them into the river, damming the river and flooding the Serengeti. The artwork is cute. Especially the expressions and how the smaller animals ride the larger ones. Overall, it's a good book. Especially for learners as there are repetitive sentences.
