This A to Z reference explores the stories surrounding more than 400 assassinations and other attempts at politically motivated violence. Giving readers a privileged glimpse of some of history's most turbulent moments, the book's narrative entries detail well-known attacks, attempts, and plots against political figures. Entries on recent assassinations are included, as well as new infomation on historical cases, such as the 1327 murder of Edward II, the 1971 KGB plot against dissenter novelist Alexander Solzhenitsyn, and the death of South African student leader Steven B. Biko in 1977.
One of the joys of reading a book like this is discovering all the history you didn't know, or didn't know much about. Political evolution goes hand in hand with murder, so a book like this gives a good lesson on world affairs. Pick any flash point on the globe and it is sure to have its share of assassinations. This volume is written in a matter of fact style and can be a bit dry at times. And the author devotes a lot more attention to some entries than others, so some readers will likely be dissapointed. But most will enjoy it and all will learn from it.
